Academic Complicity web portals expands to Germany and France

After a Dutch and a Belgian version, a German and French database were added, showing academic ties to Israeli occupation and human rights violations. The platform was created with support from Solid Sustainability Research and Stop Wapenhandel, and reveals numerous European academic relationships with Israeli companies, universities and government agencies, a significant number of which are connected to the Israeli military.

Teams of volunteers from the corresponding countries have provided the content, and continue to add new information over the next months.

From the German press release: “Each listed tie has been thoroughly fact-checked to provide a reliable and comprehensive source of information. This extensive picture of complicity prompts urgent questions about the obligations of German higher education institutions under International Law, namely to refrain from any cooperation implicated in violations of International Law and human rights. The current version details all ties available in the public domain that are ongoing, and/or remained active despite the genocide being committed in Gaza by Israel since October 2023. A team of volunteers will continue to

Academiccomplicity.eu is a factual counter-mapping of German higher education institutions. It provides a picture of German-Israeli research and funding ties sourced from websites of funding bodies and research databases. This evidence-based reporting stands in contrast to misleading media reports that reproduce press releases of the Israeli government and military. This website honors the persistent efforts of student groups who have been researching breaches of the civil clause and international law. They have endorsed a boycott of Israeli institutions in protest of the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza. Their work has not been addressed by university administrations, mainstream German media or civil society. Many German universities have also lost credibility by allowing police to enter campuses. Germany’s position in the Academic Freedom Index has declined as a consequence of this repression of solidarity with Palestine. While institutions abroad consider divestment, in March 2025 the BMBF proudly signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Research Collaboration with Israel

With our work we hope to repair some of this damage done to the civil clause, human rights, conscientious academic freedom and the sanctity of life in Palestine.

From the French press release: “The data made public here demonstrates the complicity of French academic institutions in violation of international law committed by the State of Israel. Indeed, the active support of these companies and Israeli academic institutions in colonization, occupation, and apartheid against Palestinians is widely documented.

In the context of the ongoing genocide perpetrated by the Israeli state in Gaza, many universities around the world have already cut their ties with these institutions. However, French universities persist in maintaining these compromising ties. This inaction is all the more shocking when we know that they ended their partnerships with Russian universities only two weeks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This extensive picture of complicity prompts pressing questions about the obligations of French higher education institutions under International Law, namely to end all of their ongoing partnerships and to refrain from any more cooperations implicated in violations of International Law and human rights.
